Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Her aunt worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could pursue her love for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of an elementary school student. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury, and then examine their junk. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from college. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotions networks like Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
